Daniel Piazzola, June 10, 1933 – February 24, 2017

U.S. Veteran

Daniel E. Piazzola passed away Friday, February 24th, surrounded by his family at the age of 83. Dan was born June 10th, 1933 to Daniel A. and Nell (Minor) Piazzola. Dan graduated from Butte High School in 1951. He earned a Business Administration degree from the University of Montana and later went on to receive his teaching degree and Master’s degree in Education from Western Montana College. Dan served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 as the assistant to the Chaplin in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. In June of 1961, he married the love of his life, Marlene Plate. From this union came three sons and a daughter; John, Joey, Kriss and Jerry. As a young man, Dan worked for General Electric, and as butcher with his father at the Better Meat Market. During a long Anaconda Company strike, his father encouraged him to go back to school and pursue an education degree. He enjoyed a 28 year teaching career with the Butte School District. Dan taught at the Blaine, Sherman, Kennedy, Hillcrest and Whittier schools. He had great respect for the teaching profession and was always dressed in a suit and tie. Dan was known as a strict teacher, whose favorite form of discipline for misbehaving children was to write their spelling words several times. He enjoyed connecting with past students and had great pride in their success. Undoubtedly, most are excellent spellers! Dan’s main career was teaching, but his passion was being a rancher. Each day, after school, he traded in his suit and tie for Wrangler’s and a cowboy hat. He raised registered Black Angus cows at his ranch in Sheep Gulch. He and Marlene moved out to the ranch for a “summer” in 1962 and never left. He enjoyed spending time at the Butte stockyards as it was a time to visit with his friends. Dan was a devout member of the Immaculate Conception Church, he was also member of the Butte Elks Lodge, the Butte Country Club and the Southwestern Montana Angus Association. He served on the Board of Director’s for the Montana State Senior’s Golf Association and was the Treasurer at Star Lanes Bowling Alley. He was a fan of the New York Yankees, Bull riding and watching his grandchildren’s sporting events. Dan was preceded in death by his parents Dan and Nell, his beloved son Joey, father and mother-in-law Knute & Helen Plate, brother and sister -in-law’s John Orizotti, John Plate and Harvey & Shirley Hannah. Dan was an honest, kind and hardworking man. He will be greatly missed by his family. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marlene. His sons, daughter and their spouses: John & Margaret Piazzola, Kriss & Bill Miller and Jerry & Maryann Piazzola. His grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Stefanie Boston, Megan & Matt Varcoe, Nicole & Zach Bond, Ryan Piazzola, Brody and Lexi Miller and Angela and Teresa Piazzola as well as 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters: Mary Carol Orizotti and Rosalie & Tim Driscoll. In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Butte Sheltered Workshop (845 S. Wyoming), Advocacy Program of SW Montana (PO Box 726), Butte Central Education (9 S.
