Leonard William Hihnala

Leonard William Hihnala passed away Saturday evening in a local hospital.  He was born in Butte December 21, 1951 to Jack W. and Violet (Mattson) Hihnala and attended Grant Grade School, East Junior High and graduated from Butte High School.  Leonard worked as a correctional officer at the Montana State Prison and drove bus for School District No. 1 before taking a position as bus drive for Butte-Silver Bow.  He also served on Butte Celebrations Committee.

Leonard was proud of his Finnish heritage, enjoyed reading, jazz music, playing the guitar, traveling and was active in theater work in Virginia City as well as The Mother Lode and the Orphan Girl Theater here in Butte.  Fantasy Football was a great source of entertainment for him.

Besides his parents, Leonard is preceded in death by his sisters, Judy Jeniker and Lorna Hihnala as well as his brother-in-law, Don Gilbert and a nephew, Scott Gilbert.  Survivors include his brothers and sister-in-law, Jack E. (Bev) Hihnala of Helena, David Hihnala of Butte, Larry Hihnala of Las Vegas, sister, Sharon Gilbert of Butte, brother-in-law, Frank Jeniker of Lakeside, nieces and nephews: Kimberly (Brian) Hall of Snohomish, WA, Deb Gilbert of Billings, Don (Karyn) Gilbert of New York, great nieces and nephews: Hailey and Hannah Hall, Saige Gilbert, Luke Gilbert, Logan Hall, Lane Parrot (Ryan Davey) and Trace Parrott.

Cremation has taken place.  Memorial services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home with the Reverend Su DeBree officiating.  Interment of ashes will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
