Arlene June Spear, loving wife, mom, sister and gram ma passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings after a short illness. Born in Butte on June 20, 1941, Arlene attended St Joseph’s grade school and was a proud graduate of Butte High School in 1959. She then attended Butte Business College, receiving a degree in accounting and business administration. On July 7 1962, Arlene Downing became Arlene Spear when she and Roger were married at St. John’s Evangelist Church in Butte. One of her earliest jobs was at the Fox Theatre and then later working at Beneficial and Aetna Finance, Ward Thompson Paper Company, and the Butte Sheriff’s office. Working at Butte Silver Bow City Court is where Arlene truly found her passion. During the 25 years she was employed there, Arlene had the pleasure of working with 5 different city court judges. When their children, Brad and Deanna were young, Arlene enjoyed being directly involved in their activities - Cub Scout den mother, peewee baseball coach, and girls’ basketball coach to name a few. And she never missed a game or function. Later in life, Arlene enjoyed St. Joseph’s Club gatherings, Red Hats and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernian, for whom she served as past state president. During summers, Arlene loved spending time boating and four wheeling with her family and friends at their cabin at Georgetown Lake. But above all, her granddaughters Amanda and Erika were her greatest joys. She treasured each and every minute she spent with them. Gram ma was always involved in their academics, athletic and social activities. Arlene is survived by her son Brad and daughter-in-law Rose Spear (Butte); daughter Deanna and son-in-law Joel Tierney (Montana City), granddaughters Amanda and Erika Spear (Butte); brother Fred Downing, Jr. and sister-in-law Kathleen Likvan (Missoula); brother-in-law Bob and sister-in-law Esther Spear (Butte) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years Roger; parents Fred and Katie Downing; mother and father-in-law Joe and Catherine Spear; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Roberta and Dwaine Kennis; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and one nephew. Arlene will be sadly missed by her family, her many friends and especially by her faithful four-legged child and constant companion, Bandit. She had a wonderful sense of humor and in the time honored tradition of most Butte natives, Arlene always had a story to tell. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to St James and St Vincent’s Healthcare for their care and compassion. Friends are asked to join the family on Monday after 4:00 PM in the Duggan Dolan Mortuary Chapel. Parish Vigil will be recited at 6:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11:00 am in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, located on Majors Avenue. Memorials can be made to the George Tierney Scholarship Fund c/o Butte High School; St John’s Parish; or Spirit of Columbia Gardens Carousel, PO Box 782, Butte, MT 59703.
