Patrick Hanly Burton - August 7, 1941 - April 2, 2017

After a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer and in the comfort of family, Patrick Hanly Burton passed on April 2, 2017. The youngest of three siblings, Pat was born on August 7, 1941, at Fort Lewis, Washington to parents Dr. Frank Hanly and Martha (Stocker) Burton. He attended elementary school in Ramsay and the McKinley grade school in Butte. Pat graduated from Butte High School with the class of 1959. Pat and his wife of 54 years, Rosalie Ann Shea, were married in Butte, Montana on November 24, 1962 in St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Three children were born from this union; Andy, Joe, and John. In his early twenties Pat began a fifty-year-long career in the optical business as a licensed, dispensing optician. He began his career working with his father Dr. Hanly Burton and Dr. Robert Thometz. In 1978 he opened Burton Opticians and retired in 2015. Among other business adventures, in 1984 Pat and Rosalie opened the Rocker Inn, which is currently known as America’s Best Value Inn and is managed by their son Andy. Pat is a past member of BPOE #240, Town Club, Gourmet Club and Fiddlers Club. During his early years he enjoyed hunting in the Lima Peaks with his father and fishing the “Bear Trap” on the Madison River with his brother Tom. Also, Pat never missed an opportunity to “prank” his mother and sister Susan. He enjoyed those special times with family and friends, particularly his grandchildren, at the family’s cabin on Moose Lake. Through his entire life he enjoyed cooking for family and friends; searching for the illusive piece of antique cookware or utensils; making and bottling homemade root beer; planting trees and “sprucing-up” the yard and making his famous (or infamous) sauerkraut! Most notable was Patrick’s talent playing the guitar and singing. He was always willing to entertain with a song or two during family gatherings particularly on Christmas Eve. In addition to his singing talent was his unmeasured ability to tell a joke (for those who knew him, who can forget the “piccolo player”!) Patrick is survived by his loving wife Rosalie; his children: Andy (Barbara) Burton; Joe Burton; John (Holly) Burton; and former daughter-in-law Shonna Walund. Also surviving are grandchildren: Blake Burton, Samantha, and Sophia Burton; Natalie and Abigail Burton; brother, Tom (Barbara) Burton and sister, Susan (Jerry) Ledbetter, brother/sister-in-law; Rollo (Kathy) Shea, cousin; Mary (Robert) Carroll, and numerous nieces and nephews. Special friends: Renne Earhart, Jerry Earhart, and the “Pine Box Guys”. Patrick was preceded in death by his mother and father, Frank Hanly and Martha (Stocker) Burton, and nephew Craig Burton. The family would like to express heart-felt gratitude to: James Hueftle, MD and Staff; Highland Hospice Staff: Christie, Barbara, Tracy, and Josh. Relatives and friends may call Friday from 10:00Am to 11:00Am in St. Patrick’s church for visitations. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00AM. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials to: Homer and Adele Earhart Endowment, c/o Butte Central Foundation or the Veterans organization of your choice. “The Gay Caballero and his Latraballee has left the building”. RIP “King of Kraut”
