Mr. John H. Horton passed away Sunday evening in a local hospital following a short illness. 

He was born December 2, 1933 in Streater, Illinois, one of twelve children to Joseph and Harriet (Hoit) Horton.  He was raised and educated in Illinois and served his country in The United States Navy.  It was while he was serving in the Navy that he met a nurse, Butte native, Mary Frances Bennett, at the Jacksonville Naval Hospital.  They were united in marriage on August 20, 1954 in Folkston, Georgia and following their respective discharges settled in Butte where John worked as an underground miner.  He worked in the Mountain Con, the Stewart, the Kelly and also was operator at the primary crusher at the Berkley Pit before his retirement. 

John was a trustee and member of the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department, an avid outdoorsman, a member of the Big Sky Rocketry Association and a member of the Butte Gem and Mineral Club.  

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Teeresa Horton of Helena, daughters, Mary Linn Horton, Norma Horton and Edna Horton all of Butte, his only grandson, John Michael Horton also of Butte, two sisters, Edna Mae Richard and Thelma Gouliard and sister-in-law, Vera Bennett.  Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. And who could forget his beloved cat "Missy"  who was supposed to be a rescue pet but actually picked him.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances who passed away October 19, 1991, his brothers Arthur, Walter, Robert, George, Donald, James and Ralph and his sisters, Ellen and Mary Ann. 

Mr. Horton's remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home where friends may call Thursday morning after 10 o'clock.  Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the funeral home with Pastor Phil Masters officiating.  Interment will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery.  Memorials in memory of John may be made to the Humane Society.  Express condolences at www.wayrynen-richards.com.
