Stella Spear - November 21, 1919 - December 25, 2016

Stella Spear, lifelong resident of Butte passed away December 26, 2016, she was 97. Stella was one of six children born to Alex and Sophie (Pichnor) Sekovich, November 21, 1919. She attended 1st and 2nd grades at Washington School and then transferred to the Grant School. Stella graduated from Butte High School in 1937. She was a member of the National Honor Society and assisted Thula Rader, Dean of Girls in her office. Her class was the last class to graduate from the old Butte High School. Immediately following graduation, she was employed as a Legal Secretary in the office of Meyer and Meyer. Later she became the Secretary to Superintendent Lowell Johnson for 12 years. When the Butte Community Memorial Hospital opened she became the secretary to Administrator Dr. Bruce Talbot and the first employee of the new hospital. At this time that she renewed the friendship of an old-time friend George Spear, a widower with an adorable 3 year old blond boy. Four years later George and Stella were married and Stella legally adopted Georgie, who has been her pride and joy for sixty-two years. While she enjoyed staying home, the legal law business still intrigued her, so she went to work for the law firm of Hennigson, Purcell and Genzberger. In retirement she pursued her passion for golf with a group of great ladies, “The Bonnie Highlanders.” Stella is survived by her loving family, George and Patricia Spear, Vancouver, WA., and their family; grandson Ryan (Jaline) Spear of Seattle, WA., her great grandson Henry Spear; grandson Stephen Spear, granddaughter, Anastasia (Alan) Barta of Seattle, WA., brother George Sekovich of Freemont, CA., nephews: James Sargen; Dr. Nick Sargen; nephews and nieces, Bruce and Jackie Hodgens and their families. Cousins: Dr. Don (Marianne) Hanson of Whitefish, MT., Diane (Pete) Peterson, Bozeman; Sister-in-law Dorothy Starcevich of Butte. Nephews and nieces, Joseph (Susan) Starcevich and their children Katie, Beth and Joey; Jo Ann Sustarsic. Great niece and husband, Christone and Kurtis De Shaso, Mary Ann Spear, William (Lorrie) Spear and their children: William (Kristen) Spear, John Spear, Stephanie Fortune (Mike), Mary Spear; Irene (Earl) Strubeck and their children Eric and Michelle; Ann Marie (Kenneth) Hudson and their daughters Lauren and Leigh Ann; Georgene (Bill) Mather; Linda (Tim) McCarthy; Gary (Georgia) Pericich and daughter Sarah; Ann Fran (Jim) Seidensticker and Scott. Cousins: Frances Muffich and family, Isabel Spear and family; Ann Barlow. Stella was preceded in death by her beloved husband George M. Spear, parents Alex and Sophie Sekovich; sisters: Sylvia (Thor) Birkeland, Rose (Peter) Sargen; Mary (Jim) White, Angeline Sekovich; and numerous other extended relatives. Relatives and friends may call after 5:00PM Sunday in the Duggan Dolan Chapel for visitations. Parish Vigil will be celebrated at 7:00PM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10:00Am in St. Ann’s Church. Rite of Committal will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Ann’s Church, Our Lady of the Rockies, or to a charity of donor’s choice.
