MATTHEW “MATT” NICHOLLS, January 9, 1924 to December 12, 2016

Matt Nicholls passed away in Butte on December 12, 2016. Matt was born in Butte on January 9, 1924 to Arthur and Louise Nicholls, who had immigrated to Butte from England. He attended Butte Public Schools and then entered the Civilian Conservation Corps.

In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and was deployed to Europe during WWII. Matt was honorably discharged on December 29, 1945 and returned to Butte. There he met his future wife Margret (Peggy) Helen Cox and they were married January 8, 1947. Matt and Peggy raised two sons, Matt Jr. and Randy.

Matt worked as a blacksmith on the hill for over 35 years and retired when the operation was closed. He was a die-hard fisherman for a better part of his life and loved the Big Hole River. Matt and Peggy loved to entertain at their home, especially on the Fourth of July.

He was proceeded in death by his wife Peggy, son Matt Jr. and his nine siblings (Art, Doreen, Rose, Jack, Charlie, Louise, Donald, Kenneth and Mona). He is survived by his son Randy, daughter in-laws Sandy Nicholls and Becky Nicholls, six grandchildren (Monica, Steve, Chrissie, Jennifer, Nicole and Melissa) and nine great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place.  Memorial services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home with Pastor David Andersen officiating.  Entombment of ashes will follow in Mountain View Cemetery and a reception will follow.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund or a charity of your choice.
